What in the world is Life Coaching?

I knew very little about life coaching before I began to explore it as a profession. Initially, I thought coaching was for the rich and famous, executives or people wanting to switch careers. These examples are certainly areas of coaching, but this field has just as many styles or “niches” as it has types of coaches.

Coaches can range from those who simply feel they have a talent for helping people to those who are highly trained and credentialed through extensive coaching programs.

If you are interested in coaching, do some homework. Read as much as you can. Interview possible coaches and get a feel for who is on the other end of the phone.

When you talk to different coaches, you will get an array of personalities, styles and coaching models; however, here are the standard beliefs:

  • Clients are healthy and high functioning individuals.
  • Coaching is not counseling or therapy, but a partnership to improve the quality of life.
  • Clients are committed to improving one or more areas of their life.
  • Coaching is present and future oriented.
  • The client is the expert on her life.
  • The client has all the answers; coaches are skilled at asking the right questions.
  • Coaching is client-centered. You set the goals and pace. We meet you where you are.
  • The client does most of the talking; The coach listens, gives feedback, asks powerful questions, and encourages reflection and growth.
  • The coach remains non-judgmental and does not offer opinions or suggestions.

The Mama Mojo Spin

  • I think of coaching as a self-development journey. When you choose to commit to coaching, you are committing to reflection, change and growth. Although it will take some work to get there, you will be a happier mama for it!
  • You must not only have your eyes on the goal, but be mindful of the entire process to get there.
  • The coaching process flows effortlessly when there is an honest and warm connection between us. I encourage you to take advantage of trial sessions with several coaches to find your perfect match.
  • I feel privileged to go on your journey with you. I never take for granted that there are many talented coaches out there, and I feel honored that you have chosen me.
All mamas are struggling with something in life, but I try to be light about it and encourage you to do the same. I come to coaching with warmth and a commitment to the process, but most of all, a genuine interest in your well-being.

We will have some serious and heavy sessions, but laughter and enjoyment play a big role in the process. You will succeed and you will stumble, but I commit to being with you every step of the way. I will lift you up when you are feeling down, inspire you to move forward when you are feeling stuck, listen when you need to vent, give you feedback when you are ready to hear it, challenge you if you don’t believe in yourself, and give you a good kick in the butt when you need it!
